Meralco blames tornado for Metro Manila power outages

07/08/2010 - A freak tornado was blamed for power outages in several parts of Metro Manila at the height of a downpour Wednesday afternoon.

The Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) on Thursday said power in the affected areas have been restored, and that there are no scheduled power interruptions for the day.

"Nangyari sa Metro Manila noong 3 p.m., bigla lumakas ang ulan, may kasamang lightning at may information kami na nagkaroon ng freak tornado sa ilang bahagi ng Manila. Nagdulot iyan ng outages sa ilang linya natin," Meralco's Tess Adriano said in an interview on dzBB radio.

(During a downpour Wednesday afternoon, there was lightning and we received information a freak tornado occurred in a part of Manila. It caused outages in some of our lines.)

She said Wednesday's power interruption was not scheduled, even as they managed to bring back power to most areas in one hour.

But in Cavite, she said maintenance work was to blame for Wednesday's outages in some areas.

She said Meralco was commissioning new circuits in its new Tagaytay West substation.

On the other hand, Adriano said there was no scheduled power interruption for Thursday, even as there are enough power reserves.

"Malaki ang ine-expect nating power reserves (We expect much power reserves for today)," she said.

A separate report on dzBB radio said the affected areas Wednesday included Manila, Paraรฑaque, Makati, Pasay, Malabon and Quezon Cities, Novaliches and Cavite.

While power was restored in an hour, another power outage hit Tutuban in Tondo in Manila, and Malinta in Valenzuela City.

Power was restored in Malinta at 7 p.m. Wednesday while power in Tondo was restored at 2 a.m. Thursday. —GMANews.TV
