02/17/2011 - MANILA, Philippines – Anti-crime crusader Teresita Ang-See said the 3 Filipinos on death row in China knew that they were smuggling illegal drugs.
Ang-See, who served as an interpreter for Chinese authorities who investigated the cases, said the 3 Filipinos had a deal with drug syndicates.
She told TV Patrol on Thursday that it was not the first time that the 3 brought drugs to China.
She added that the cases went through a thorough review and “back-channeling” between the 2 countries.
Ang-See said the death penalty ruling is not harsh because the cases involved illegal drugs.
She said the death penalty should also be imposed on Chinese who are arrested in the Philippines for drug trafficking.
Vice-President Jejomar Binay, meanwhile, remains hopeful that China will be convinced to set a stay in the execution of the 3 Filipinos.
He told TV Patrol in an interview Thursday night that China did not totally reject his request to visit Beijing to seek clemency for the 3.
“'The time is not ripe' ang pagkakasabi,” Binay said. “Hindi naman sinasabi na hindi puede.”
“If I were to take that optimistic opinion, baka puwede pa sa darating araw,” he said.
“Umasa pa tayo, baka puwede pa.”
He added that the government is issuing official and informal channels to appeal for a stay in the execution
“Hangga't di pa nangyayari ang Lunes at Martes, sige lang,” he said. “Dagdagan pa natin ng dasal.”
He added that the 3 Filipinos’ families will fly to China.
“Inaasikaso ng DFA [Department of Foreign Affairs] DFA. Pumayag naman ang bansang Tsina,” Binay said.
“Lahat ng gastusin nila, sasagutin ng pamahalaan," he added. (ABS-CBN news)
